Mouse study traces peptide preparations' cholesterol effects to TFA

A Nature Communications study found that trifluoroacetate (TFA), a charged component often present in synthetic peptide salts, had metabolic effects of its own in mice and cultured liver cells. Cholesterol reductions seen with several peptide preparations were traced to TFA, and replacing it with chloride in one peptide preparation removed that effect. The findings show why studies need controls that separate a peptide's activity from the effects of accompanying chemicals. These animal and cell results do not establish safety or benefit in people.
