WHO adds semaglutide, tirzepatide and other GLP-1 drugs to its essential medicines list

The World Health Organization's updated Model List of Essential Medicines (24th edition) added the GLP-1 receptor agonists semaglutide, dulaglutide and liraglutide and the dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist tirzepatide. The listing is only for glucose-lowering treatment in adults with type 2 diabetes who have both obesity (body mass index of 30 or more) and either established cardiovascular disease or chronic kidney disease; it does not cover obesity or weight loss on their own. WHO said high prices of medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are limiting access to them.
