Veterans study maps GLP-1 drug benefits and risks across 175 health outcomes

A Nature Medicine study using US Department of Veterans Affairs records compared 215,970 people with diabetes who started a GLP-1 receptor agonist with people starting other diabetes drugs and with about 1.2 million on usual care. Compared with usual care, GLP-1 drugs were linked to lower risk for 42 of 175 outcomes, including substance use disorders, dementia and clotting disorders, and higher risk for 19, mainly gastrointestinal problems, kidney stones and low blood pressure. As an observational analysis, it shows associations rather than proof of cause.
