SURPASS-CVOT: tirzepatide matches dulaglutide on heart outcomes in type 2 diabetes

Eli Lilly's SURPASS-CVOT trial randomized 13,299 adults with type 2 diabetes and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease to tirzepatide (Mounjaro) or dulaglutide (Trulicity) and followed them for a median of four years. Tirzepatide met the non-inferiority goal, with 8% fewer major adverse cardiovascular events (hazard ratio 0.92, 95.3% CI 0.83 to 1.01), and all-cause death was 16% lower in an analysis not adjusted for multiple testing. More people stopped tirzepatide because of side effects (13.3% versus 10.2%).
